When I first heard the word essay, I was in Middle school around 15 years old. I didn’t know what it involved but all I heard was, you need to write alootttt. It sounded overwhelming at first but thankfully, writing and speaking was an interest of mine and I was ready to build upon it. First off, I want to let you in on what essay writing is.
So let me break it down. Essays are used to develop and expand ideas or arguments that accompany supporting evidence. It’s a formal piece of writing that contains points of contention and also expound on evidence that is carefully selected in order to compliment your overall idea and thoughts.
At high school level, students are given a question which they must develop and answer for in essay form. One of my favourite forms of essay writing is critical analysis. The main purpose here is to demonstrate an understanding of the ideas expressed in a text or topic. The key features of this type of essay writing are that several paragraphs may need to be written about one or more aspects of the text.
This all sounds quite monotonous but I promise you, once you understand structure of essay writing, you will feel so much more confident and be able to write anything. I first started teaching essay writing when I was still in school. I used to help my friends out with their essay formation and also my younger sister who was 2 years younger who loved learning my tips and tricks when it came to writing and formulating essays.
I just want to assure you that essay writing is a skill that requires a bit of time and all you need is someone to simplify it for you and break it down in the simplest way possible. It’s all about having fun and one way I like to have fun is by choosing worldly issues to help bring understanding to the overall structure and process. It’s hard enough to learn a new topic plus learn a new structure in writing so choosing a topic that you are already familiar with might just be what is needed to alleviate some of the stresses around learning essay writing.
Some of my academic essays I have written in the past are honestly love letters. When I read over work I wrote, I get teary because it brings back memories of the time when I wrote them and how I constructed those pieces. If you would like to read some of my work that received a High Distinction grade at a Masters level then read here to download.
I wrote this piece when I was 24 years old (almost 8 years ago). This piece is on the Palestinian and Israeli Conflict as I undertook my specialisation in Human Rights and International Law during my Masters degree at Deakin University. Since then, I have worked incredibly hard in building upon my writing skills and am incredibly grateful to have this talent and desire to help and teach others.
Essay writing has enabled me to learn how to free-flow write and express myself in ways that allows me to step in and out of structured writing. Through my blog posts, this too is another writing platform that allows me to freely express my heart to you.
I hope you too start to learn to love essay writing just as much as I do. Watch your life unfold as you learn a new way of communicating with the world.
Start writing sister friend.
With love.
